St. Francis Xavier's ChurchSt Francis Xavier's Church was completed in 1856 on the site of an old Portuguese church by a French priest, Father Farvé. After the St Peter's Church, the St Francis Xavier's Church was the second Roman Catholic church to be built following the proclamation of religious freedom by the Dutch colonialists in 1702 - before that, the Roman Catholics - descendents of the Portuguese as well as converts - were forbidden to practise their religion openly, and had to worship in secrecy.Construction of St Francis Xavier's Church started in 1849, on the site of an earlier Portugese church. The twin-spired Gothic church was named after the famous Catholic missionary who visited Malacca on several occasions from 1545 to 1552, on his way to the Far East. Getting there From Dutch Square, walk along Jalan Laksamana. The St Francis Xavier's Church is on the right side of the road. Previous | Home |
