Mosques

The mosques in Malacca are some of the oldest in Malaysia. Indeed Islam spread throughout this region starting from Malacca, being introduced by Indian Muslim as well as Arab traders in the 15th century. At the beginning of the Malacca sultanate, some of the early rulers were still practising Hinduism, and only converted to Islam around the mid 15th century.

Malacca mosques bear their own architectural style which are quite different from those found elsewhere in Malaysia. You will notice that the dome is usually much smaller, the prayer hall is usually square with roofing that is pyramidal.
