Malacca clan associations

The Chinese in Malacca, like their counterparts in Penang, group themselves according to their village of origin, surname, and trade. Through these groupings, they form clan associations, district associations and trade guilds. Through these association, the Chinese peoples of differing ethnic backgrounds find something in common with fellow comrades. These associations act as the place where newcomers arriving from China can gain a foothold in establishing themselves, and thereafter contribute to assisting their fellow men. They are also venues for ancestral worship, with clan temples often erected within the premises of the association, and patron deities honored. There is usually a room where ancestral tablets are displayed and venerated, along with plaques hanging on the walls commemorating glorious events and individuals from the clan.
