Heritage Sites

Malacca is a city rich in heritage sites. However, despite a history going back over five hundred years, the oldest monuments in Malacca date to Dutch era. Even the Porta de Santiago, which was built by the Portuguese, was renovated under the Dutch, and what we see today of it shows insignias that goes back to the Dutch era.

Many of the colonial buildings in Malacca, particularly those around the Dutch Square dates to the Dutch era. There is little left from the Portuguese era, even less of the Malacca Sultanate, when most of the structures were built of wood, and were long gone. Most of the shophouses in Malacca dates from the British era, with a few from the Dutch era.
