Birdwatching at Bukit China

Located in the heart of Malacca town is Bukit China the oldest Chinese burial ground outside of mainland China. During the 1980’s beautification of the hill was undertaken where many plants and trees were planted. Eventually various types of birds make their home on top of this ancient hill and other birds around the area feed on the various types of plants and wild fruits available there. The best time to observe the birds is during the middle of the year when many of the wild fruits are in abundance. Among the various kinds of birds that can be spotted are:

White bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) - Lang Siput.
White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) – Pekaka Belukar.
Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) – Merpati.
Peaceful Dove (Geopelia striata) – Merbuk Aman.
Pink-necked Green Pigeon (Treron Vernans) – Punai Gading.
Koel (Eudynamys scolopacea) – Sewah Tahu.
Yellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier) – Merbah Kapur.
Richard’s Pipit (Anthus novaeseelandiae) – Pipit Tanah.
Magpie Robin (Copsychus saularis) – Murai Kampung.
Long-tailed Tailor Bird (Orthotomus sutorius) – Perenjak Pisang.
Brown-throated Sunbird (Anthreptes malacensis) – Kelicap Mayang Kelapa.
Scaly-breasted Munia (Lonchura punctulata) – Pipit Pinang.
Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) – Ciak Urasi.
Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) – Tiong Gembala Kerbau.
White-vented Myna (Acridotheres javanicus) – Tiong Tongkeng Putih.
Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis) – Dendang Selayang.
House Crow (Corvus splendens) – Gagak Rumah.
